Is alimony considered a social security benefit?
I believe my parent received money after my father passed. I would like to know if these would be considered a social security benefit.

- Alimony is a obligation between a husband and wife upon divorce.. It has nothing to do with Social Security. What you parent received upon your dad's death was Social Security benefit for minor child if you were under age 18. Your mom gets Social Security payments when she is 65.
- Sassy is correct except for your mother's age of eligibility. Widows are entitled at 60. Others at 62.
- Alimony is paid by one ex-spouse to the other ex-spouse. Social Security benefits come from the government. It is possible that your mother received Social Security benefits after your father died. These would be widow's benefits and are available to an ex-spouse if the marriage lasted at least 10 years and the widow has not remarried.
