Is leisure time really free for the contemporary individual?
time is free when we organizing it according to our want and desires, when no any other external factor impose us what to do in leisure. But today, in modern society the capitalist imperative for profit has turned the leisure as a key site for its reproduction. Leisure has become a site of commodification and individuals revolve around consumerism rather than choosing activities and hobbies. Our concern is how to adapt our leisure around consumption, or when we doesn’t consume we spend our leisure in watching TV turning our ourselves into couch potatoes. Generally media and cultural industries play a crucial role in organizing our leisure in ways that serve consumerism.

- Many people believe that the media defines our choices in leisure activities. In most cases, that is just not true. We tend more toward activities which take our minds away from our work activities. For example, if we are customer service representatives, we will tend to avoid lengthy phone conversations during our leisure time.
- so leisure is no longer freee as it was in the old days. now its measured in dollars and cents and sense. sense as seen by the capitalists. so u must spend and spend for that is now the meaning of leisure. even couch potato has to pay - the tv licence, electricity, can of beer on the coffee table, and in a few yrs time u need a new couch! gone were the days. consumerism is indeed our latest scourge and reward too. u r right
